Philip Glass

April 20th, 2009 by fred

This past Sunday, it was my great delight to see Philip Glass perform at The Music Hall in Portsmouth, NH.

I have been a long time enthausaist of Philip Glass and his many symphonies, orchestras, and Philip Glassthe like. My introduction to this wonderful composer was  Einstein on the Beach, back in the’80s.

There is something about the music of Glass that defies definition — sort of a deep melancholy timbre overlaying the substrate of all existence, as best as I can describe it in words. Needless to say, his music affects me like no other composer I have ever heard, past or present.  At the danger of sounding like a crazed metaphysical nut, Philip Glass’ music is an audible representation of my very core, my essence.

But you never heard me say that.

His performance with Wendy Sutter and Mick Rossi was superlative, a very delight. It began with Glass doing a solo from Metamorphosis,  an old favorite of mine, followed by solo performance of Wendy Sutter, the cellist, followed by a duets with Philip and Wendy,Philip and Mick, and a wonderful trio performance.

Wendy was very dynamic and passionate in her performance on the cello.  Mick was wonderful with the drums and various other instruments he played.

Along with the nice weather we’ve had here this weekend, it was a wonderful way to round off the evening on Sunday. And quite a delight, a bright point in these otherwise challenging times.
